"The Green Bean" Does Field Day 2009

The Green Bean once again provided the radio platform for Field Day 2008, as sponsored by the ARRL and operated by K1UR and K1NR. Last year when looking for alternative operating sites in the opposite direction (north of us versus south) some promising locations around Portsmouth NH harbor were spotted. So this year with the weather more or less cooperating in that area, Portsmouth was where we headed.

We got to the area plenty early and had time to check out some alternate sites before heading to our preferred site. This gave us the chance to explore some of the forts around the harbor and also do some geocaching.

Finally, we headed to our ultimate destination, a nice park at Fort Foster, Gerrish Island, Kittery Point, Maine. We chose this location since we had not operated Field Day from Maine before and fortunately it turned out to be a nice very spot that allowed us to park next to the beach and enjoy a good view...at least when there was no fog.

As in 2008 we spent much of the day with fog. Though it was not nearly as dense as last year it did limit the nice view and got into the antennas as well as we experience some flaky problems.

In the end, we set a personal record with 111 contacts, using all bands from 75 meters to 6.
