NA1GB "The Green Bean" Does Field Day 2012

The Green Bean once again provided the radio platform for Field Day 2012, as sponsored by the ARRL and operated by K1UR and K1NR. In 2011 we planned to operate in the only New England ARRL section we had not yet been in--Western Massachusetts. But the weather was lousy and so we cancelled our original plans and just operated from the Worcester Airport, which was at least in WMA. For 2012 though we finally did head for our original WMA destination, Skinner State Park also known as Mount Holyoke and located in Hadley. This is a nice high spot, with an easy access road and a nice view of the Connecticut River and points south.

On arriving we found the summit closed so we were forced to park just below but still in a good location with a nice view to the sount. We arrived about an hour before the contest started so we took a walk up to the summit and explored a bit.

Conditions were generally poor but we made contacts on all bands from 75m up through 6m. Except for a brief thunderstorm that forced us off the air for about half an hour the weather was quite nice. The park closed at 8:00 just as band conditions were getting better.
